My daughter enjoys my weaknesses, especially when she can either get a good laugh or be paid to help me. Getting things done on my computer fall into this category and as a result, she often gets her wish (laughing at me and free coffee). I admit that I have no idea how to load music onto my ipod and without her I’d be running to to thoughts in my head – not nearly motivating enough to run by!
Creating this blog was one thing that I managed to do without her help though when she reads it, she always has suggestions for ‘inprovement’ that make no sense to me. Anyway, I continue to write and surf the web on my own and try not to complain to her too often. So, you can imagine my absolute glee when I found that I could load coupons onto my grocery card! I am usually the lady in front of you at the store trying to find the crumpled coupons in her bag, but no more! It was kinda fun picking out which coupons I wanted without ‘clipping’.
Are there things that you feel you can’t do or are hesitant to try? There is no such thing as being too old anymore. Often it is just our mindset that gets in the way. Sometimes we don’t like asking for help or appearing dumb. If we take our time, learn the steps, and practice, we can acquire lots of new skills. For me, it is worth the price of coffee to spend time with my daughter for a few hours. But one day I will have to learn to get music on my own.
I love the fall. Yes, I was one of those nerdy types who was happy about returning to school in September. I love learning! That’s probably why I’ve spent so many years pursuing my education. And, to this day, I still look for new things to add to my activities. Right after graduate school, I treated myself to quilting classes. I am a decent quilter and I love to collect fabric.
For the past few years, I have been toying with the idea of learning to speak french again. Despite having started in the 3rd grade and studying french into college, I never became fluent with it. And, since my life has not yet included that trip to Europe, I have forgotten most of what I had learned.
That was until last month. After seeing “Eat,Pray,Love” my daughter and I were dreaming out loud about traveling to France and Italy after she graduates from college next year. Mainly my dreaming, she has already been to Europe twice (the things we do for our kids). Anyway, I decided to start re-learning some french. After buying a cd to play in my car and taking out several library books, I have been practicing abit everyday. Then last month I found a french-speaking group for all levels in town. I attended my first meeting this week and it was a lot of fun. No one made fun of the newbies, and the native speakers were very patient as they helped us participate in conversations. And, I was surprised that I could actually understand them pretty well.
We have all heard how important it is to exercise your brain as well as your body. I’m not one who enjoys crossword puzzles or Sudoku, but
I love studying french again. Next step is to start planning my dream vacation…
